Dr. Judith Loredo holds a Certificate of Completion from San Antonio College; a BS in the Science of Communication Disorders, an MA in Speech Pathology, and a M.ED. in Education, from Our Lady of the Lake University; and a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin, where she was named as the 20thRecipient of the Dean Karl Brendt Award as a Distinguished Graduate of the College of Education. She received the same honor from San Antonio College.
With a career spanning more than 47 years in the field of education, Dr. Loredo has served as a speech pathologist; teacher; Director of Early Childhood Education; Director of Special Education; Assistant to the Deputy Commissioner for Professional Development, Texas Education Agency; Assistant to the Deputy Commissioner for Programs & Administration, Texas Education Agency; Consultant Compensatory Education, Texas Education Agency; Asst. to the Director of the Cooperative Superintendency Training Program – UT Austin, Adjunct Instructor Ed. Admin Dept UT Austin; Superintendent of Schools of Southside Independent School District in San Antonio, Texas; Chairperson, Teacher Education, Dean of Academic Affairs, and Dean of Academic Support Programs at Huston-Tillotson University; Assistant Commissioner for the Division of P-16 Education, Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board; and in her present position as Coordinator of the MSI-TEN LBJ Institute for STEM Education & Research/EPDC – NASA Grant, Texas State University.
She was a Tenured Professor at Huston-Tillotson University and awarded Professor Emeritus status when she left the institution.
Dr. Loredo has also been the recipient of the following awards throughout her career: Piper Professor; Distinguished Professor, Sears & Roebucks Corporation; Joe & Theresa Long Legacy Award awarded by UT Austin Division of Diversity; Woman of Distinction, Central Texas Girl Scouts Association; Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Education Leadership Award; National Hispanic Hall of Honor Inductee; Outstanding Leader in Education, Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce; Cambridge Who’s Who IP Designee; and the Joseph T. McMillan Endowed Professor in Teacher Education. In addition, Dr. Loredo holds the distinction of being the first Hispanic female elected to the position of Superintendent of Schools in Texas and has the honor of having the building which houses the Professional Development Assessment Center in the San Antonio Southside Independent School District named in her honor.
Dr. Loredo has served on many committees throughout her career both professional and community related. In addition, she has served on six doctoral dissertation committees as a visiting faculty member.
Presently, Dr. Loredo serves on the Advisory Board of the UT Charter, Chair of the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber Foundation Board; and is also Parliamentarian and Past President of the 8212 Women’s Auxiliary of Barton Creek Country Club. She is a member of Settlement Home.
Dr. Loredo and her husband, businessman Sonny Loredo, have five daughters, one son, twenty-one grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
