Laura Regan was born in Canada in 1950, and was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area from the age of three. By Kindergarten she knew she wanted to be an artist. While working on a self-portrait in crayon, she added ruby slippers onto her feet, transforming herself into Dorothy from the “Wizard of Oz”, and realized the MAGIC of art!
Laura attended the Maryland Institute College of Art and majored in graphic design. After a short stint in the advertising world, she realized that that was not the life for her, so she opted to try her hand at painting wildlife, falling back on what she had learned in her one semester of painting.
She is now widely known for her vibrant wildlife portraits. Her original paintings are included in many collections including those of tennis star Martina Navratilova and opera singer, Marilyn Horne. One of Regan’s favorite commissions was to paint two 9-foot paintings for the Lobby of the Mirage Casino in Las Vegas.
Laura’s art has also been used to raise funds for many organizations including the
World Wildlife Fund & the San Francisco Zoo. This past year she created a collection of blank greeting cards taken from her original paintings, now available in many states. She loves the idea of “spreading the word” about the beauty of the creatures that are a part of this world that we share.
Regan has also illustrated 13 children’s books, many of which have won national awards. She has exhibited at The Lawrence Hall of Science at UC Berkeley, The Society of Illustrator’s Show in NY, The Monterey Museum of Art in CA, The Contemporary Art Center in New Orleans & the Children’s Illustrated Art Museum in St. Louis to name just a few.
She now lives in Austin Texas with her husband Peter. Together they have a family of 6 grown kids and 6 grandchildren.
